Maybe Watch This: Tower Heist

Promotional Poster for Tower Heist
I think we all know what I am about to say here, I was bored and I started browsing through the On Demand offered by Comcast Cable when I ran across a bunch of awesome movies I wanted to watch. So I picked one out and that is that.

Except that is not exactly all of that. I chose Tower Heist not because of the movie, I meant the plot line was pretty obvious. Instead, I decided to watch this movie because of Ben Stiller, who I have loved since I saw Zoolander, and Eddie Murphy, who sometimes manages to be in amazing films such as Bowfinger. That is right, this is a movie I watched because I wanted to see the actors, as rare as that occurrence is. Anyway, here is my review.

Tower Heist [2011]
Like I said previously, the plot of this movie is pretty obvious. A high-rise apartment manager works every day for millionaires, making sure that their real estate is kept in tip-top shape as they go about their extraordinarily rich lives. He is decent friends with the man that owns the tower and, as is told, the richest man in the tower. Then one day that man, the one that owns the tower, is found out to be a fraud and bankrupt and suddenly everything that the main character had invested his life in is turned upside-down. So what does he decide to do but rob the place that he works at.

And if that is not enough information, then you should understand that this is not an Oceans Eleven sort of film, where a band of highly trained technicians come together to complete what seems like an impossible task. Instead, it is more like a band of highly incapable misfits come together to try and overcome a task that with their abilities they should be able to do. And of course, as the head of this band of misfits is Ben Stiller as the main character. To say the least, it should make for an interesting film.

By far the worst part of this movie is Eddie Murphy, who keeps trying to be that same-old funny character he plays in every other film out there. Except we are all so used to his type of character that it really is not that interesting let alone that funny anymore and so I thought he actually dragged on in parts where the plot was picking up. Not to mention I also felt that Eddie Murphy played the most stereotypical black man that has ever been portrayed in a movie, and in a bad way. He is a thief, he cheats on his girlfriend, he is a swindler, he has memory issues, and he is a thug. It seemed like the list of ways that Eddie Murphy could portray a black man as the stereotype were numerous in this film, but the ways he could break that were few far in between. It was actually quite sad that an actor of his caliber decided to take a role and then play it as such.

Other than that, do not start watching this movie and hope that you are watching a comedy. Although there might be several comical actors in this film, none of them are actually all-too funny in this film, but instead they seem to be more serious than ever before. This is a serious movie with a comedy layer finely placed at the top, which is a nice way of saying there are things to make you smile but they are not something that will make you cry out with laughter. So keep that in mind.

But even with both of these, I actually really enjoyed this movie. It was a typical sort of heist movie, get the cash and go, but the odd scene and the band of misfits all coming together to try and rob the owner of the tower was well done. Not to mention all of the side-characters that played a part in taking down the tower's owner all had very interesting and well-done parts. I thought that the ensemble of watching the heist come together was actually quite entertaining, though mainly because it was a band of non-professional misfits trying to come together for the heist. So if you are looking for a robbery film that is slightly different, I recommend this one.
