21 Jump Street Movie Poster |
21 Jump Street [2012]
So this is just like any other typical movie you have seen about officers of the law going under-cover in a high school to find out who is selling drugs. Basically they both were strangely different in high school, the extremes of nerd and geek, and they in general did not get along. Then they get out of high school and become friends for one reason or another, so it should lead to a funny but very generalized comedy. And to that effect, that is exactly what this movie is, a funny but very generalized comedy.
Yet what the film lacks in the experience of amazing comedy writers and sophisticated plot lines does not mean that this film is a bust. Instead, the lack of the skilled pen is made-up for by the amazing cast found in this movie. Jonah Hill plays his part perfectly, acting like the smart high schooler that is not very popular but then turns into a police officer. Similarly, Channing Tatum plays the dumb athletic jockey part perfect as he rolls out the stupid jokes left and right. And it is the combined efforts of both actors that really make this stand out. For example, their conundrum with explosives seems inevitably funny because it is both slightly unexpected and both characters roll with the explosions the way I think they would have had they been people in real life.
Yet like I said, the very generalization of this film makes it predictable and so there will be no jokes involving the plot that you should not already expect. If you are willing to give that up for the comedy that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are able to provide, then this movie might be worth watching.
Based Off Television
Although I personally have never seen it, the title and premise of the movie comes from the television show of the same name, 21 Jump Street. Basically, the show was about two undercover police officers that specialize in youth crime. Each episode contains a new crime for the dynamic duo team to solve along with an ending that shows what happened. One of the key differences between the television show and the film is that while the film refocused the idea to be a bit more of a comedy, the television show was rather serious. In total, the show ran from 1987 to 1991, or a rather good five seasons.
